MONTGOMERY — Alabama’s governor on Monday he is worried the state’s tough crackdown on illegal immigration law could hurt the recruitment of foreign industries, so he’s reaching out to foreign executives to let them know that the state welcomes them.

“We are not anti-foreign companies. We are very pro-foreign companies,” Bentley told reporters at the Capitol.

The Republican governor and other supporters of the law have described it as the nation’s toughest. Some parts of it were put on hold by the federal courts, but major provisions took effect in late September, including allowing police to detain motorists who can’t produce a valid driver’s license. Since then, two foreign workers with the Mercedes-Benz and Honda auto assembly plants in Alabama have run into problems.

Twenty-eight at the time of his arrest and now 32, Carranza still stands out, but for a very different reason.

He remains the only defendant never to have given a statement to police about his alleged role in the execution-style slayings that shocked a city and drew national attention. Four college-age friends gathered behind Mount Vernon School on Aug. 4, 2007, listening to music and enjoying the summer night together, were robbed, brutalized and shot in the head. Only one survived.

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) insisted on Saturday night that as president she would see to it that every undocumented immigrant in the country be deported.

Speaking at a Fox News forum hosted by Mike Huckabee, the Minnesota Republican was fairly broad in describing how she would round up and ship out of the country the 10 to 12 million people living here without documentation. But the implication was that she would empower government agents to do the deed.

"[I]t would be enforcement: Enforcement both at the border but also by the [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] agents. Right now the ICE agents -- those are the agents in the interior of the country who are tasked with enforcing the law -- they are not enforcing them and we also have sanctuary cities now where they don't enforce the laws on deportation. I think that what we simply need to do is to start enforcing the laws which we are not doing and begin the process of deportation," she said.

Sheriff Paul Babeu has recently been called an “anti-immigration activist” by online site Media Matters for America, but is unthreatened by the comments, stating they couldn’t be further from the truth.

Chris DeRose, leader of the Sheriff’s exploratory committee, spoke with Today Publication’s about the situation.

“The Sheriff’s opposition to illegal immigration is well documented,” said DeRose, “Paul is strongly in support of legal immigration, and an advocate for enforcing the rule of law.”

SACRAMENTO, Calif.-Nearly 1 million undocumented immigrants could live and work openly in California with little or no fear of deportation under an initiative unveiled Friday by a state legislator and others.

Assemblyman Felipe Fuentes, a Democrat, is helping to spearhead the measure, called the California Opportunity and Prosperity Act.

The proposal was filed Friday with the state Attorney General's Office, marking a first step toward a drive to collect the 504,760 voter signatures needed to qualify for the ballot.

Fuentes called the measure a "moderate, common-sense approach" necessitated by the federal government's inability to pass comprehensive immigration reform.

Washington (CNN) -- An intense struggle among several senior Justice Department officials was revealed Friday as internal documents on the gun-running Operation Fast and Furious were released by the department.

SACRAMENTO (KABC) -- California's "Dream Act" will make it possible for undocumented students to access college financial aid. But a new report estimates that once fully implemented, the Dream Act will cost taxpayers $65 million a year.

Undocumented college students can begin receiving publicly funded financial aid beginning in 2013.

The non-partisan Legislative Analyst now pegs the cost to taxpayers at $65 million per year when fully implemented, nearly three times more than the original low-end estimate. It's difficult to pinpoint an actual number because University of California and California State University tuitions keep rising.

The majority of the 10.2 million undocumented adult immigrants in the United States have lived in this country for at least 10 years, according to a new report by the Pew Hispanic Center.

The report comes on the heels of a debate among GOP presidential candidates over what to do with the millions of undocumented immigrants who are living in the country, particularly those who have lived here for more than a decade and have planted roots in the United States.

The issue was fueled by GOP presidential candidate and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who proposed letting undocumented immigrants obtain a special kind of legal status that allows them to work here if they have lived in the United States for a long time, have children, have paid taxes and belong to a church.

A convicted child sex offender and illegal immigrant who was charged with breaking into an Elgin home in June where a 13-year-old girl hid in the basement has skipped bail, according to police.

Salvador Sarabia, 28, has served time for two burglaries, drug-related charges and criminal sexual abuse of a minor and has been deported twice. He had been free after posting the required $10,000 of his $100,000 bail.

Sarabia, of the 800 block of Ford Avenue, did not show up for his court date on Nov. 21, and a warrant was issued for his arrest, according to Elgin police.

People entering the U.S. illegally from Mexico are believed responsible for more than one-third of human-ignited wildfires in Arizona over a five-year period, according to a government report that could stoke congressional debate over illegal immigration.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said the Government Accountability Office report supports (Access GAO Report here) remarks he made earlier this year after his state was hit hard by wildfires. At the time, McCain was accused of "scapegoating" immigrants.
