Bachmann On Immigration: Deport All The Undocumented

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) insisted on Saturday night that as president she would see to it that every undocumented immigrant in the country be deported.

Speaking at a Fox News forum hosted by Mike Huckabee, the Minnesota Republican was fairly broad in describing how she would round up and ship out of the country the 10 to 12 million people living here without documentation. But the implication was that she would empower government agents to do the deed.

"[I]t would be enforcement: Enforcement both at the border but also by the [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] agents. Right now the ICE agents -- those are the agents in the interior of the country who are tasked with enforcing the law -- they are not enforcing them and we also have sanctuary cities now where they don't enforce the laws on deportation. I think that what we simply need to do is to start enforcing the laws which we are not doing and begin the process of deportation," she said.

Illegal immigration - Sheriff Babeu unthreatened by negative responses

December 3, 2011

SanTanValleyToday.com

Sheriff Paul Babeu has recently been called an “anti-immigration activist” by online site Media Matters for America, but is unthreatened by the comments, stating they couldn’t be further from the truth.

Chris DeRose, leader of the Sheriff’s exploratory committee, spoke with Today Publication’s about the situation.

“The Sheriff’s opposition to illegal immigration is well documented,” said DeRose, “Paul is strongly in support of legal immigration, and an advocate for enforcing the rule of law.”

Sheriff Babeu addressed the issue in his own words on his website SheriffPaul.com. There he states that calling out representatives when it comes to the reality of the current state of the boarder and securing does not make him anti-immigration.

1 million illegals could live & work in CA under newly introduced AMNESTY Bi

SACRAMENTO, Calif.-Nearly 1 million undocumented immigrants could live and work openly in California with little or no fear of deportation under an initiative unveiled Friday by a state legislator and others.

Assemblyman Felipe Fuentes, a Democrat, is helping to spearhead the measure, called the California Opportunity and Prosperity Act.

The proposal was filed Friday with the state Attorney General's Office, marking a first step toward a drive to collect the 504,760 voter signatures needed to qualify for the ballot.

Fuentes called the measure a "moderate, common-sense approach" necessitated by the federal government's inability to pass comprehensive immigration reform.

"I hope this shows Washington, D.C., that if they fail to act, California will take the lead on this critical issue," Fuentes said in a written statement.

Justice Department sends Congress 1,400 pages on 'Fast and Furious'

December 2, 2011
Cable News Network
Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.

Washington (CNN) -- An intense struggle among several senior Justice Department officials was revealed Friday as internal documents on the gun-running Operation Fast and Furious were released by the department.

About 1,400 pages that had been demanded by Capitol Hill investigators were sent to three key congressional committees in advance of what is expected to be a contentious hearing next Thursday when Attorney General Eric Holder testifies on the subject.

The documents lift the veil on conflicting views among Justice Department executives, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Arizona U.S. attorney's office over whether and how to respond to allegations made in letters from Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa.

Grassley had demanded to know whether, as whistle-blowers claimed, the ATF was allowing firearms bought by suspected straw purchasers in Arizona to "walk" across the border into Mexico, and into the arms of drug cartels. Grassley had alleged the ATF's surveillance operation lost track of weapons and two of them ended up at the scene where Border Patrol agent Brian Terry was murdered last December.

Calif. Dream Act cost estimates higher than expected

SACRAMENTO (KABC) -- California's "Dream Act" will make it possible for undocumented students to access college financial aid. But a new report estimates that once fully implemented, the Dream Act will cost taxpayers $65 million a year.

Undocumented college students can begin receiving publicly funded financial aid beginning in 2013.

The non-partisan Legislative Analyst now pegs the cost to taxpayers at $65 million per year when fully implemented, nearly three times more than the original low-end estimate. It's difficult to pinpoint an actual number because University of California and California State University tuitions keep rising.

REP. LAMAR SMITH: Obama has a Christmas list that rewards illegals

December 1, 2011
By Rep. Lamar Smith
The Washington Times

This holiday season, it seems President Obama is making a list and checking twice to find out who’s been naughty and nice. But unlike Santa’s list, Mr. Obama’s list is not based on merit. The president and administration officials are determined to make their own list that rewards lawbreakers and penalizes American workers.

There are an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants living in the United States and about 7 million of them work here illegally. At the same time, 23 million Americans are unemployed or cannot find full-time work. Jobs should be protected for legal workers. But the Obama administration places illegal immigrants ahead of the interests of American workers.

For example, last Christmas the Obama administration and then-Democrat-controlled Congress pushed for the enactment of the Dream Act. This bill is essentially a gift-wrapped jobs package for illegal immigrants. The Dream Act would prevent Americans from getting jobs since millions of illegal immigrants would have become eligible to work legally in the United States.

Elderly mom ran human-smuggling operation for more than 40 yrs

SAN DIEGO — The 85-year-old matriarch of a human-smuggling ring that operated for decades out of a Tijuana hotel was sentenced to 2½ years in federal prison Thursday.

Felicitas Gurrola De Mason sat quietly in the courtroom of U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw, her shoulder-length gray hair framing her lined face. During the hearing, she spoke softly through an interpreter.

“I’m remorseful and I ask for forgiveness,” she said, before acknowledging, “I’m very nervous. I can’t speak.”

Her daughter, Hilda Moreno Gurrola, 54, sat to her left, and on her right sat Guadalupe Ojeda Zamora, 50, who is not related to Gurrola but was raised by her in Tijuana.

The trio were the organizers of an unusual smuggling ring that was run by women for years, efficiently shuttling an unknown number of illegal immigrants through the San Ysidro Port of Entry.

Majority of Illegals Have Lived in US for Over a Decade, Report Claims

The majority of the 10.2 million undocumented adult immigrants in the United States have lived in this country for at least 10 years, according to a new report by the Pew Hispanic Center.

The report comes on the heels of a debate among GOP presidential candidates over what to do with the millions of undocumented immigrants who are living in the country, particularly those who have lived here for more than a decade and have planted roots in the United States.

The issue was fueled by GOP presidential candidate and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who proposed letting undocumented immigrants obtain a special kind of legal status that allows them to work here if they have lived in the United States for a long time, have children, have paid taxes and belong to a church.

The Pew report also said that nearly half of the nation’s undocumented parents are parents of minor children.

ALIPAC: good news or the bad news first?

Friends of ALIPAC,

We are sorry to report that for the first time in our organization's history, we have failed to reach our minimum operational expenses for our final funds drive of 2011. All things being equal, this would put us on a final shutdown date of January 1, 2012.

ALIPAC's fund raising difficulties can be explained by four major causes. The first is the horrific political and economic environment we find ourselves in as a nation at this time. The second is that we are having to take issue with different politicians like Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich of whom some of our members have decided to support.

Third, many of our supporters are utterly dismayed by the authoritarian and dictatorial actions of Obama, who has decreed a form of Amnesty for illegal aliens, while secretly using our tax monies to buy military style weapons for the smugglers bringing in the aliens and the drugs. Unfortunately, Obama has demoralized some of our supporters who are throwing their hands up in exhaustion instead of rallying against Obama.

Tuesday, sources close to the investigation reached out to Action 4 News claiming that is simply “not true.”

They said the suicide letters left behind did not mention Luna’s concerns over the Dream Act or his immigration status.

Sources went on to tell Action 4 News Joaquin left behind eight to nine letters each dedicated to people close to him including his sisters, brothers and even his best friend.

Holder lashes out at The Daily Caller while refusing to address growing calls for his resignation

The Daily Caller

Embattled Attorney General Eric Holder today demanded The Daily Caller stop publishing articles about the growing calls in Congress for his resignation because of the failed Operation Fast and Furious gun-walking program.

As Holder’s aide was escorting the attorney general offstage following his remarks Tuesday afternoon at the White House, a Daily Caller reporter introduced himself and shook Holder’s hand. The reporter asked him for a response to the growing chorus of federal legislators demanding his resignation.

Holder stepped towards the exit, then turned around, stepped back toward the reporter, and sternly said, “You guys need to — you need to stop this. It’s not an organic thing that’s just happening. You guys are behind it.”

Illegal alien sex offender facing his third burglary charge skips bail

A convicted child sex offender and illegal immigrant who was charged with breaking into an Elgin home in June where a 13-year-old girl hid in the basement has skipped bail, according to police.

Salvador Sarabia, 28, has served time for two burglaries, drug-related charges and criminal sexual abuse of a minor and has been deported twice. He had been free after posting the required $10,000 of his $100,000 bail.

Sarabia, of the 800 block of Ford Avenue, did not show up for his court date on Nov. 21, and a warrant was issued for his arrest, according to Elgin police.

Although Sarabia had an Immigration and Naturalization Services hold against him, a Cook County ordinance passed in September allowed Sarabia to leave the Cook County jail after posting bond.

Illegal immigrants suspected in 30 border fires in Arizona

November 22, 2011
Los Angeles Times

People entering the U.S. illegally from Mexico are believed responsible for more than one-third of human-ignited wildfires in Arizona over a five-year period, according to a government report that could stoke congressional debate over illegal immigration.

Sen. John McCain
(R-Ariz.) said the Government Accountability Office report supports (Access GAO Report here) remarks he made earlier this year after his state was hit hard by wildfires.  At the time, McCain was accused of "scapegoating" immigrants.

"I hope this report is a lesson to the activists and public officials that would prefer to engage in partisan character attacks rather than help focus the discussion on the vital need to secure our southern border," he said in a statement.

Immigration: DOJ Says New Law Complicates Enforcement

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (AP) -- Alabama's new law against illegal immigration may hamper enforcement rather than being the tough crackdown sought by its supporters — by taking officers away from the vital job of prosecuting and deporting immigrants with criminal records, Justice Department lawyers said Monday.

The president of the Alabama Association of Chiefs of Police, Boaz Police Chief Terry Davis, agreed that officers are stretched by multiple duties, particularly with tight budgets. But, he said, enforcing the state law should not conflict with the broader federal goal of nabbing criminals who are in the country illegally.

"I can see where they're coming from ... but I think it's just another tool to use in doing our job," Davis said of Alabama's tough, new law. "We're going to get the federal folks involved just like we always have. I would hope it doesn't cause a conflict because we're all in this together."

U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance, the top federal prosecutor for 31 counties in north Alabama, said local agencies already strapped for money and manpower are being forced to develop their own plans for enforcing the state law rather than concentrating on prosecuting and deporting illegal immigrants with criminal records, the priority set by the Obama administration.

Vance said she and the head of the Justice Department's civil rights division, Tom Perez, have met with local authorities to discuss what she called a "significant problem" of both enforcing the state law and tracking down criminal immigrants with only limited resources.

Utah Balks as Court Delays Hearing on Immigration Suit

A federal court judge Monday ordered two lawsuits filed against Utah’s enforcement-only immigration law to be combined and set a hearing for Feb. 17 — a time frame that had been opposed by Utah’s attorney general.

U.S. District Court Judge Clark Waddoups issued the order after Attorney General Mark Shurtleff’s Office took issue with Justice Department lawyers who sought an extension after they swooped in late last week to file suit against HB497.

The hearing on the first lawsuit, filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Utah and the National Immigration Law Center, was originally scheduled for this Friday. Both entities filed on behalf of the Utah Coalition of La Raza and a series of individual plaintiffs.

The brief filed by Shurtleff said the state opposed a "protracted schedule" for the hearing and noted that because of previous meetings between Shurtleff and Justice Department lawyers, they’ve known about the case for about six months.

Bachmann: Deport All 11 million Illegal Immigrants, In Steps

Intent on drawing a clear contrast between rival Newt Gingrich and herself, presidential candidate Michele Bachmann called for 11 million illegal immigrants to be deported from the United States in steps.

In the week since a GOP debate during which Gingrich supported legalizing some undocumented immigrants, Bachmann has pounded the former House Speaker, likening his position to "amnesty" and circulating a letter he co-authored in 2004 that supported a path for worker legalization.

Asked by radio host Laura Ingraham on Monday about an earlier statement she made differentiating between immigrants who had recently entered the country illegally from those with longstanding ties to the United States, Bachmann said she was never referring to legalization.

"What I'm talking about is the order of deportation, the sequence of deportation," Bachmann replied. "It is almost impossible to move 11 million illegal immigrants overnight. You do it in steps."
