Bentley Reassures Foreign Industries in Wake of Immigration LawMONTGOMERY — Alabama’s governor on Monday he is worried the state’s tough crackdown on illegal immigration law could hurt the recruitment of foreign industries, so he’s reaching out to foreign executives to let them know that the state welcomes them.
“We are not anti-foreign companies. We are very pro-foreign companies,” Bentley told reporters at the Capitol. The Republican governor and other supporters of the law have described it as the nation’s toughest. Some parts of it were put on hold by the federal courts, but major provisions took effect in late September, including allowing police to detain motorists who can’t produce a valid driver’s license. Since then, two foreign workers with the Mercedes-Benz and Honda auto assembly plants in Alabama have run into problems. On Nov. 16, a German manager with Mercedes-Benz was arrested under the law in Tuscaloosa for not having a driver’s license with him while driving a rental car. The charge was dismissed after the man provided documents in municipal court. Bentley said he learned about the arrest in a call from someone with Mercedes, but he did not say whom. Last week, a Honda employee from Japan was detained under the law in Leeds. Police at a roadblock found him carrying an international driver’s license and passport, but not an Alabama license or Japanese license as required by the law. Leeds police said they released the man under the immigration law at a magistrate’s recommendation, and a city judge dismissed a charge of driving without a license. NJ Jury Selection Begins for Trial of Sixth Suspect 2007 ShootingNEWARK — Powerfully built, with a weather-worn face and menacing scowl, Jose Carranza stood out as the oldest and toughest defendant among the six young men charged in the Newark schoolyard killings.
Twenty-eight at the time of his arrest and now 32, Carranza still stands out, but for a very different reason. He remains the only defendant never to have given a statement to police about his alleged role in the execution-style slayings that shocked a city and drew national attention. Four college-age friends gathered behind Mount Vernon School on Aug. 4, 2007, listening to music and enjoying the summer night together, were robbed, brutalized and shot in the head. Only one survived. Bachmann On Immigration: Deport All The UndocumentedRep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) insisted on Saturday night that as president she would see to it that every undocumented immigrant in the country be deported.
Speaking at a Fox News forum hosted by Mike Huckabee, the Minnesota Republican was fairly broad in describing how she would round up and ship out of the country the 10 to 12 million people living here without documentation. But the implication was that she would empower government agents to do the deed. "[I]t would be enforcement: Enforcement both at the border but also by the [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] agents. Right now the ICE agents -- those are the agents in the interior of the country who are tasked with enforcing the law -- they are not enforcing them and we also have sanctuary cities now where they don't enforce the laws on deportation. I think that what we simply need to do is to start enforcing the laws which we are not doing and begin the process of deportation," she said. Subjects: Illegal immigration, campaigns, Rep. Illegal immigration - Sheriff Babeu unthreatened by negative responsesDecember 3, 2011
Kristen Smith SanTanValleyToday.com Sheriff Paul Babeu has recently been called an “anti-immigration activist” by online site Media Matters for America, but is unthreatened by the comments, stating they couldn’t be further from the truth. Chris DeRose, leader of the Sheriff’s exploratory committee, spoke with Today Publication’s about the situation. “The Sheriff’s opposition to illegal immigration is well documented,” said DeRose, “Paul is strongly in support of legal immigration, and an advocate for enforcing the rule of law.” Sheriff Babeu addressed the issue in his own words on his website SheriffPaul.com. There he states that calling out representatives when it comes to the reality of the current state of the boarder and securing does not make him anti-immigration. 1 million illegals could live & work in CA under newly introduced AMNESTY BiSACRAMENTO, Calif.-Nearly 1 million undocumented immigrants could live and work openly in California with little or no fear of deportation under an initiative unveiled Friday by a state legislator and others.
Assemblyman Felipe Fuentes, a Democrat, is helping to spearhead the measure, called the California Opportunity and Prosperity Act. The proposal was filed Friday with the state Attorney General's Office, marking a first step toward a drive to collect the 504,760 voter signatures needed to qualify for the ballot. Fuentes called the measure a "moderate, common-sense approach" necessitated by the federal government's inability to pass comprehensive immigration reform. "I hope this shows Washington, D.C., that if they fail to act, California will take the lead on this critical issue," Fuentes said in a written statement. Justice Department sends Congress 1,400 pages on 'Fast and Furious'December 2, 2011
Cable News Network Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. Washington (CNN) -- An intense struggle among several senior Justice Department officials was revealed Friday as internal documents on the gun-running Operation Fast and Furious were released by the department. About 1,400 pages that had been demanded by Capitol Hill investigators were sent to three key congressional committees in advance of what is expected to be a contentious hearing next Thursday when Attorney General Eric Holder testifies on the subject. The documents lift the veil on conflicting views among Justice Department executives, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Arizona U.S. attorney's office over whether and how to respond to allegations made in letters from Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa. Grassley had demanded to know whether, as whistle-blowers claimed, the ATF was allowing firearms bought by suspected straw purchasers in Arizona to "walk" across the border into Mexico, and into the arms of drug cartels. Grassley had alleged the ATF's surveillance operation lost track of weapons and two of them ended up at the scene where Border Patrol agent Brian Terry was murdered last December. Calif. Dream Act cost estimates higher than expectedSACRAMENTO (KABC) -- California's "Dream Act" will make it possible for undocumented students to access college financial aid. But a new report estimates that once fully implemented, the Dream Act will cost taxpayers $65 million a year.
Undocumented college students can begin receiving publicly funded financial aid beginning in 2013. The non-partisan Legislative Analyst now pegs the cost to taxpayers at $65 million per year when fully implemented, nearly three times more than the original low-end estimate. It's difficult to pinpoint an actual number because University of California and California State University tuitions keep rising. REP. LAMAR SMITH: Obama has a Christmas list that rewards illegalsDecember 1, 2011
By Rep. Lamar Smith The Washington Times This holiday season, it seems President Obama is making a list and checking twice to find out who’s been naughty and nice. But unlike Santa’s list, Mr. Obama’s list is not based on merit. The president and administration officials are determined to make their own list that rewards lawbreakers and penalizes American workers. There are an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants living in the United States and about 7 million of them work here illegally. At the same time, 23 million Americans are unemployed or cannot find full-time work. Jobs should be protected for legal workers. But the Obama administration places illegal immigrants ahead of the interests of American workers. For example, last Christmas the Obama administration and then-Democrat-controlled Congress pushed for the enactment of the Dream Act. This bill is essentially a gift-wrapped jobs package for illegal immigrants. The Dream Act would prevent Americans from getting jobs since millions of illegal immigrants would have become eligible to work legally in the United States. Elderly mom ran human-smuggling operation for more than 40 yrsSAN DIEGO — The 85-year-old matriarch of a human-smuggling ring that operated for decades out of a Tijuana hotel was sentenced to 2½ years in federal prison Thursday.
Felicitas Gurrola De Mason sat quietly in the courtroom of U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw, her shoulder-length gray hair framing her lined face. During the hearing, she spoke softly through an interpreter. “I’m remorseful and I ask for forgiveness,” she said, before acknowledging, “I’m very nervous. I can’t speak.” Her daughter, Hilda Moreno Gurrola, 54, sat to her left, and on her right sat Guadalupe Ojeda Zamora, 50, who is not related to Gurrola but was raised by her in Tijuana. The trio were the organizers of an unusual smuggling ring that was run by women for years, efficiently shuttling an unknown number of illegal immigrants through the San Ysidro Port of Entry. Majority of Illegals Have Lived in US for Over a Decade, Report ClaimsThe majority of the 10.2 million undocumented adult immigrants in the United States have lived in this country for at least 10 years, according to a new report by the Pew Hispanic Center.
The report comes on the heels of a debate among GOP presidential candidates over what to do with the millions of undocumented immigrants who are living in the country, particularly those who have lived here for more than a decade and have planted roots in the United States. The issue was fueled by GOP presidential candidate and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who proposed letting undocumented immigrants obtain a special kind of legal status that allows them to work here if they have lived in the United States for a long time, have children, have paid taxes and belong to a church. The Pew report also said that nearly half of the nation’s undocumented parents are parents of minor children.
