Peru NAFTA Expansion Peru-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (PUFTA)

October 12, 2006
Dear Activist,

If you have the time, this issue is critical, please take 4 steps to stop Peru NAFTA expansion:

1. Call your representative and senators. Click here.

2. Write your Members of Congress. Demand to know --before Election Day -- if they will oppose Peru NAFTA expansion.

3. Write a Letter to the Editor and tell your community why stopping Peru NAFTA expansion is important locally.

4. Get a Peru NAFTA expansion fact sheet (.pdf) and pass it around.

First, thank you for your enthusiastic response on the issue of the Peru NAFTA expansion and to our preparatory conference call. About 500 of you asked to participate. We are inspired by your interest and willingness to be active on this issue.

As a recap, GOP leaders plan to force a vote on the Peru NAFTA expansion (PUFTA) just after Election Day. That's right, the fired and retired members of Congress would come back in a "lame duck" Congressional session to avoid accountability for the Peru NAFTA expansion. Call your Members of Congress now.

If we don't stop the sneak attack, PUFTA will:

* Continue the outsourcing of good U.S. jobs;
* Worsen our immense, economy-threatening trade deficit;
* Ignore basic workers' rights;
* Threaten the global environment by putting Peru's environmentally sensitive Amazon basin — the lungs of the planet — into the hands of huge timber, oil and mining corporations;
* Increase narcotics production and violence by destroying farmers' livelihoods and displacing millions of campensinos from their farm communites; and
* Limit Congress' authority to ensure our domestic port security. For-profit companies with subsidiaries in Peru, like Dubai Ports World, would have a right to operate landside activities of U.S. ports and drag the U.S. government before an international tribunal if such "rights" are denied.

Please take action now! If you can do only one thing, call your representative and senators and demand they take a position now -- before the election. If you want to do more, send a letter expressing the position in writing. Click here for talking points. After you've heard from your representative and senators or their staff, please tell us what they said. This is critical to our ability to hold Congress accountable. Send me an e-mail, dedeli@citizen.org, with the name of your representative and senators and what they said about PUFTA.

Sincerely,
David Edeli
